Celebrate ‘Back to School’ Season with Bookies – Book-Inspired Cookies!

To be fair, these aren’t really recipes rather inspiration. Inspiration for what? Bookies! Now, I’m not going to claim that I came up with the name ‘bookies’. Certainly, someone before me has thought of this as a name for cookies styled after books! But when I was brainstorming today for clever treat ideas to commemorate the ‘Back to School’ season, my brain came up with ‘bookies.’ And that’s where my search began!

Typing ‘book cookies’ into Google produces more results than you might imagine. And while I’m sure most of them don’t apply to what I was looking for, I found quite a few that do! I couldn’t pick just one, so below are links to a few of my favorites. These definitely look like they would take some serious skill and patience to pull off, but I’m sure they’d taste just as sweet with a few mistakes here and there. Plus, those mistakes would make them one-of-a-kind, and everyone knows how valuable rare books are!

Here’s the links! I would have included the pictures themselves, but most are copyright protected and I’m not looking for legal trouble. That wouldn’t be very sweet at all! Though the links from flickr automatically open as pictures when you list them, so click those images for more information 🙂

Colorado Black Bear Has a Sweet Tooth and a Soft Step!

While there is certainly nothing cute or funny about the effects the dry summer is having in many parts of the country, I think it’s necessary to look for a little levity in almost any situation. Case in point: the Colorado Candy Bear. Drought has dried up the berries the bears of Colorado usually feed on, leaving them searching for food about town. Some have broken into homes, some have broken into cars, and one decided he had a better idea. As for that one? He broke into a candy store. Carefully, might I add!

According to an article on CBSNews.com – Careful bear raids Colorado candy shop – a black bear decided to treat himself to multiple sweets one July morning. While many of us might imagine he charged through the window destroying the candy shop he was raiding, that isn’t the case at all! The intelligent, resourceful bear instead pried open the front door, and without breaking a thing walked inside and found himself some breakfast. This bear breakfast included “English toffee and some chocolate-chip cookies dipped in caramel and milk chocolate called “cookie bears.” The bear took “cookie bears”! Seriously, can’t make this stuff up.

While the bear did prefer to take his treats outside to eat them, according to the surveillance video he “made seven trips in about 15 minutes.” The store owner said that there wasn’t much evidence of the intruder, aside from some dirt on the counter, paper on the ground, and of course, all that missing candy. Without even a wrapper left behind, if it weren’t for that video we may have never known what really went down. And I just can’t bear the thought of that!

Brown Bagging My Way to My Own ‘Back to School’ – Starring Sandwiches and Flipsticks!

No matter how many years it’s been since I was in school, every August I feel that same mix of excitement and nostalgia associated with the ‘Back to School’ season. I remember choosing the perfect ‘first day’ outfit, stuffin my new backpack with more pens, pencils and notebooks than I could possibly need, and anxiously awaiting the day the school posted whose homeroom you would be in on the front doors. I have since learned schools now post this information online, but I can’t imagine it’s as exciting as begging your mom to take you once you’ve heard through the grapevine that they’ve gone up, and bounding out of the car like lightning to search for your name, hoping against all hope you’d be in the same class as your bestie!

Yes, I miss almost all of it. Recess. Morning cartoons. Spelling bees. Simply being young. And while  I might not be able to get all of it back, there’s one thing I can still enjoy today: a well-packed lunch in a brown paper bag.

I don’t pack along a brown bag lunch every day, but particularly when the nostalgia bug bites, a turkey sandwich will do wonders for my soul that pizza and Chinese can’t touch. As for what I put in that lunch? Other than a turkey or bologna sandwich, I pack a can of Pepsi, small bag of chips, Slim Jim and one of a few candy favorites, including Flipsticks taffy.

Do you flip for flavorful Flipsticks as well? There really is no other taffy quite like them. And while they aren’t as easy to find as they once were, they’re out there and as divinely delicious as ever! Here’s a few of my favorite spots for Flipsticks…
