One of the Coolest Desserts You’ll Ever Make – Gelatin Fish Bowls!

I have long been an admirer of Jell-O packed with ‘floating’ treats. Whether they be banana slices, strawberry slices or gummy bears, I am both happy to eat them and mesmerized by the look. I’ve never been as good at getting things to float in Jell-O as my mom and her sisters, but I don’t let mixed results of the past get in the way of the cooking adventures of today!

With a close friend’s birthday party on the horizon, I started poking around online to see if I could find a fun and unique dessert to bring along. I want to bring something summery that isn’t too predictable. As much as I love ice cream and strawberry shortcake, by the time her party rolls around in August most of us will have enjoyed both many times this summer. With a pretty appearance in mind, I decided on Jell-O. It’s something light that almost everyone loves, it’s most definitely summer-friendly, and – importantly – you can add stuff to it! And I knew exactly what I wanted to add when I stumbled across the Fish Bowl Gelatin recipe on…

Martha’s recipe calls for:

1 2-liter bottle of lemon-lime soda, flat
4 1/4-oz. packages of unflavored gelatin
2 drops of blue food coloring
2 ounces of gummy fish

By clicking the recipe link above, you can check out the step-by-step directions on Stewart’s site. However, I will be trying something slightly different! I am always drawn to read the comments on recipes to see what others have tried or experienced, and right there in the reviews are a slew of ideas and tips. Be sure to check those out, too! The one I think I’ll actually be trying is from reviewer Jaime North, who recommends using “half a pack of blue jello and 2 packs of unflavored gelatin with sprite.” Jaime also uses Nerds as gravel (love it!) and put the gummy fish in once the Jell-O set halfway, returning it to the fridge to finish gelling.

If you’ve ever created a dessert like this one, please share any tips you might have in the comments. I’ll need all the help I can get making this awesome, and I’m sure others can benefit, too! 🙂
